It's become a part of my routine to spend a couple of hours a day at a very special coffee house in my neighbourhood. They're a small business with an agreeable clientele of hippies and new families. Half the place is an organic bakery (it's wonderful to be given the biggest cinnamon bun on the tray, still warm from the oven and dripping with gooey, buttery icing) with a small selection of organic grocery items; the other half is a restaurant and coffee house where the cashier asks for your name so that they're able to call you up when your meal is ready. As long as the place isn't too busy, they're really nice about me sitting there for hours on end, sipping away at my double coffee and making up flash cards for my Russian class.

There's a disabled woman who works there, and every time I come in, she gives me a big, unconditional love-filled hug. It leaves me feeling lighter, like a weight's been lifted off my shoulders. The first time I met her, she came up behind me, wrapped her arms around my waist, and afterwards told me that I looked like I needed it. (I did.)

What's your haven?

My haven has got to be this Italian restaurant near where I work. It's shady and quiet because it's tucked inside a building (even though it can still fill up during lunchtime). It's a lovely place to take a break from the office, have a nice bowl of pasta and read a good book.
